The Red Light District

The Red Light District

The Red Light District is a rather unique kind of neighborhood - if you're into sex, drugs and rock'n'roll then this place is for you. It is located around Oude Kerk in the oldest part of Amsterdam.

The last sex shop before the Red Light District ends

De Wallen, Walletjes or Rosse Buurt - it has a lot of names. The basics - prostitution and soft drugs are legal in The Netherlands, and De Wallen is the largest Red Light District in Amsterdam.

The Red Light Souvenirs shop

You must be at least 16 if you want to buy sex, and the prostitute must be at least 18. Twenty minutes will probably set you back some €50. Don't expect to meet any Dutch working women - by far the majority are from outside The Netherlands.

The Hash Mariuana Hemp Museum

The other major part of the Red Light District is the ability to buy and enjoy soft drugs, like hash or marihuana. You're restricted by law to 30 grams of pot a day, and must be at least 18 years old to buy something to smoke.

A display window - see before you buy

The working women in the Red Light District don't hold much back. The "Red Light" in Red Light District is not without reason - if there's a red light in a window, then there is sex for sale, and the woman offering is on display behind it. Or you see an empty chair with a sign: "Will be back soon."

Door sales in the Red Light District

These doors across the street from Oude Kerk are also sales displays - a woman in each door. Be advised that although the working women are one of the bigger Amsterdam tourist attractions, they do not want to be photographed. If you try, you risk being chased down the street by some very angry people.
